Daily Maui Photo App, Now for iPad

Two months after the release of version 2.0, the Daily Maui Photo App now has native support for the iPad! Now, you have yet another option to enjoy your Daily Dose of Aloha wherever you go.

It’s been a busy year so far updating my first iOS application, so how about we get caught up on the latest details…

Latest iPhone and iPad Releases

So far this year, there have already been two major updates to the Daily Maui Photo App for iOS.

Version 2.1

Version 2.1 is the latest release at the time of the writing. With it, full native support for the iPad is now available, along with the following features:

  • Browse the last 18 daily photos featured on our website.
  • Full screen Map View to browse recent photos from all across the island.
  • Support for Retina display in new iPad (3rd Gen).

Version 2.0

Earlier in the year, the iPhone version was completely rewritten from the ground up to support iOS 5.0. In addition to being rewritten, the following features were added as well:

  • Added higher quality images to support devices with Retina Displays.
  • Added Twitter support using built-in iOS Twitter integration.
  • New Banner Notifications using the Notification Center in iOS 5.
  • Improved scrolling and UI features.
  • Added full screen mode for viewing photos and captions.
  • New Menu button with links to More Maui resources.
  • Added Facebook logout option in Menu settings.
  • Added option for Rating the App in the App Store.
  • New option for sharing the App with friends by email or social media.

Learn more about on the App support page.

Talk Story

As they say on the islands – Talk Story means to chat with friends, tell stories, and share memories. Here, it follows the same spirit. I’d love to hear from you on your thoughts, suggestions, issues, questions, or anything else related to this App. Or anything Maui, for that matter.

Along those lines, I’ve made the extra effort to build in direct contact options into both versions of the App, as well as creating an official Facebook Page for the Daily Maui App for iOS right here.

Stop by and leave some of your Aloha there.

Leave a Review

If you’ve already downloaded the App (or are thinking about it now) and enjoy these photos everyday, it would be great if you decided to leave a rating or review in the App Store. I purposely left out those nagging “Rate Me” alerts in this App – but that doesn’t mean I can’t leave a nice subtle reminder here, right? :)

Stay Tuned

Getting this latest release launched for the iPad was a major milestone for me – seeing that it’s another great leap to reach a larger and expanding device base.

Yet, as happy as I am to launch this version, I’m even more excited to move on to my 2nd Maui App already. In fact, I have 2-3 more ideas taking up space on my project list for the year at the moment, so stay tuned here and on Facebook for more updates in the coming months.

Daily Maui Photo App v1.1.1 Bug Fix

A minor bug fix release for the Daily Maui Photo App for iPhone has been released as Version 1.1.1 in the App Store.

The bug fix was for the notification badges not working properly. Chalk it up to this being my first iPhone app and still overcome those first few learning curves. The good news is, however, I rarely make the same mistakes more than once. :)

So, if you haven’t yet, make sure you grab the update from the App Store and let me know if you run into any other issues. Also, if you like the app and wanted to leave a quick rating or review, that’d be most helpful.

And remember, the app now has Facebook integration for sharing your favorite photos directly with your friends. So if any of the most recent or upcoming photos spark one of your old Maui memories, give it a shot.

Many Thanks,
– Kris

Daily Maui Photo App v1.1 Available

Not soon after the first release of the Daily Maui Photo App for iPhone, the next updates are already available in the new Version 1.1.

New Features in Version 1.1

Here is the list of features that have been added in the new release.

  • Support for Notification Badges to let you know when new photos are available.
  • Facebook Integration for sharing your favorite photos on Facebook. Found under the Share button.
  • Refresh button for updating the latest photos in case of failed or incomplete downloads.
  • Improved server integration to reduce photo download wait times.

As before, you can find a full list of features and screenshots on the support page.

Future Plans

I’m pretty happy with the additional features added to this release, so unless the feature requests come pouring in, this version will stay as is for now. In the meantime, I continue to work on refreshing my photo inventory for these daily photos and ensuring the highest quality images are available (as time permits). There are also exciting updates happening for the Daily Maui Photo website, too, so I hope to news on that in the coming weeks.

As far as a custom iPad version of this application, I do have ideas of what I’d like to offer. However, since I don’t currently own an iPad or have used one enough to appreciate the user experience of iPad applications, it will be on hold until I pick one up. Or, someone buys me one. ;)

Lastly, I hope to have an Android version of the application in a few months as well. Right now, I’d say the April timeframe, but I know mentioning any dates for sure will come back to bite me.

Your Support

Being a free app, it’s clear that my main goal is sharing the magic of Maui and the warm Aloha Spirit that those of us lucky enough to have visited the islands have grown to love. Instead of charging for the app or ruining it with advertising, all I ask in return is that if you do enjoy the images in the application, please leave your comments and ratings in the App Store, and also help spread the word to others you know that might enjoy this daily dose of Aloha.

Many Thanks,
– Kris

Daily Maui Photo App Released for iOS

Continuing to ride the momentum and success of my recent Daily Maui Photo website launch, I’m happy to announce that I’m starting off 2011 with my first iOS application now available in the App Store.

Albeit a simple application functionally, it offers just one more way for Maui fans out there to obtain their daily dose of Aloha. The new iPhone App now joins the list of web, iGoogle gadget, RSS, email, Facebook, and Twitter as ways to enjoy a different photo from Maui each and every day.

Features

You can find a full list of features and screenshots on the Daily Maui Photo App Support Page, but here’s a short list of the features in this initial release.:

  • Browse the 7 most recent photos in the series.
  • Interactive maps for each photo, including Standard and Satellite map views.
  • Save photos to your Camera Roll to use as wallpaper, contacts images, etc.
  • Share photos by email using the standard iPhone email application.

More to Come

While starting small, there are a number of features already in development for the first App update. Here’s a sneak peek:

  • Facebook integration for sharing your favorite photos of the week.
  • Twitter integration for sending updates and links for your favorites.
  • Push Notifications (badges only, no alerts) for letting you know when the next photo is available.

If you’re a Maui fan or have already followed the Daily Maui Photo collection elsewhere on the web, now’s your chance to bring the Aloha with you wherever you go. So don’t delay, fire up that iPhone or iPod Touch, or crack open iTunes and have a look at what my App has to offer.

And if you like it, please leave a good rating and share it with all of your friends. And if you don’t like it, please let me know!

Enjoy,
– Kris
